What happened
Asahi Linux has merged M3 series SoC support into its installer, now officially supporting M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max MacBooks and iMacs. Webcam, microphones, USB 3 (10 Gb/s), hardware video decoding including AV1, WiFi, and Bluetooth all work, but GPU 3D acceleration, sleep, and HDMI are not yet functional. Installation is currently gated behind Expert mode via `curl -L https://alx.sh/ | EXPERT=1 sh`, with the Expert requirement expected to drop around the Fedora 45 beta in a few weeks.
Why it matters
If you have an M3 MacBook and want to run Linux, this is now viable for most non-GPU workloads—but don't expect 3D acceleration, working sleep, or HDMI output yet, and the Mac Studio M3 Ultra is unsupported. Wait for the Fedora 45 beta if you want the non-Expert installer experience.
Discussion angle
Whether running Linux on Apple Silicon is worth it for local dev environments given the missing GPU acceleration and sleep—versus just using macOS with containers or VMs.
