What happened
JDK 27 is now Generally Available as build 35, with no P1 bugs reported since the second release candidate on 20 August 2026. The release ships 9 JEPs, most notably making G1 the default garbage collector in all environments, enabling compact object headers by default, and adding post-quantum hybrid key exchange for TLS 1.3. Structured Concurrency remains in its seventh preview and the Vector API in its twelfth incubator.
Why it matters
If you run JVM services, G1 is now the default GC everywhere and compact object headers are on by default—both can change your memory footprint and tuning assumptions, so benchmark before upgrading. Structured Concurrency hitting its seventh preview means you should not build production plans around it yet. Post-quantum TLS support is worth evaluating now if you handle long-lived encrypted connections.
Discussion angle
Compact object headers by default and G1-in-all-environments are the two changes that could shift real production memory and latency numbers—worth comparing heap usage on a representative service before and after upgrading.
