What happened
JPJ registration data reported by SoyaCincau shows Malaysia logged 6,029 EV registrations in September 2026, 8.12% of total industry volume, up 70.7% year-on-year from 3,532 but down 31.7% from August's record 8,833. Year-to-date EV registrations hit 53,537 (up 98.8% from 26,928), already beating all of 2025's 44,813 with a quarter left. Petrol hybrids jumped 127.15% YoY to 5,447 units while diesel fell 49.04% to 133, and the Proton e.MAS 5 alone took 2,490 units, or 41.3% of September's EVs.
Why it matters
If you build anything touching charging, payments, fleet or in-car software for Malaysia, the demand curve is now measurable: ~8% of new vehicles are BEVs and hybrids grew faster than BEVs in September, so charging-network apps, roaming/payment integrations and hybrid-aware fleet tooling have a bigger addressable base than a BEV-only plan assumes. The 31.7% month-on-month drop from August is a reminder to model seasonality (registration batching, model launches) rather than extrapolating one record month.
Discussion angle
Hybrids grew 127% YoY while EVs fell 31.7% month-on-month — does that change what you'd build for Malaysian drivers, and is EV charging/payment software a real opportunity or a crowded one given the e.MAS 5's 41.3% share?
