What happened
LineageOS 24 has been rebased onto Android 17 (released June 2026), which the maintainers say went faster than anticipated because of work done adapting to Google's earlier refactors. Security patches covering August 2025 through October 2026 are merged across LineageOS 18.1–24.0, with the patch-level string updated only on branches Google still ships bulletins for (Android 14 / LineageOS 21 and newer); legacy 15.1, 16.0 and 17.1 got patches through November 2025 but keep their old strings, and the December 2025 bulletins contained patches the team could not backport. The release also ships core apps updated to Material Design 3 Expressive, a new Canvas image editor that pairs with Glimpse and Aperture, and a Catapult Android TV launcher battery indicator credited to contributor Timi Rautamäki. LineageOS turns 10 on December 24, 2026.
Why it matters
If you or a client keep older Android hardware alive on a custom ROM, the patch-level string is no longer a reliable signal: LineageOS 21+ reports a real Android security patch level, but 18.1, 19.1 and 20.0 receive backported patches without an updated string, so compliance checks or MDM-style tooling that reads that field will misreport those devices. Also note that the December 2025 bulletins were not fully backported, so a 15.1/16.0/17.1 device is knowingly behind on at least that set.
Discussion angle
Backporting security patches to branches Google no longer supports: where should a volunteer project draw the line, and what does it mean for anyone reusing old phones as test devices or cheap endpoints when the reported patch level can't be trusted?
