What happened
Apple has announced the second-generation HomePod mini for Malaysia at RM649, up RM120 from the original RM529, with pre-orders starting 9:00am on 15 October 2026 and availability on 30 October 2026 in Pink, Green, Blue, White, and Midnight. The S10 chip replaces the S5, and new features include four-speaker surround sound with Apple TV 4K, Sound Glow, and use as a Mac default speaker or stereo pair—but Mac use requires a Mac that supports Wi-Fi 6E or newer.
Why it matters
If you use a Mac for development and were eyeing it as a desk speaker, verify your Mac has Wi-Fi 6E or newer before paying RM649; otherwise this launch does not change any developer, database, AI, or startup workflow. The RM120 increase over the original makes it a consumer audio purchase, not a builder tool.
Discussion angle
For Apple-centric developers, does the Wi-Fi 6E Mac requirement make the HomePod mini 2 a non-starter as a Mac speaker, and is the RM649 price justified over the original RM529?
