What happened
Kaspersky documented three fake iPhone Duo storefronts mimicking Apple's design: an English one advertising a 25% launch discount (256GB at USD1,499.25 / ~RM6,127 versus the official USD1,999 / ~RM8,170) with a 30-minute countdown, a German-language clone listing from EUR2,099 (~RM9,569.13) that claims it will redirect to Apple's store but never does, and a Portuguese-language site called Tecstore that pushes visitors into WhatsApp. Notably, none ask for card details upfront — the English page only collects name, phone, email and shipping address, promising a 'sales manager' will follow up on payment. Kaspersky says no Malay-language scam sites have been spotted yet, and attributes the scams' traction to iPhone Duo supply shortages.
Why it matters
Almost nothing here changes how you build or ship software — this is consumer fraud, not a platform or tooling shift. The one transferable detail: the scam funnel deliberately stops at contact details, then moves the victim to WhatsApp, which sidesteps card-network fraud detection and app-store takedowns. If you run an e-commerce or lead-gen checkout in Malaysia, that 'collect details, sales manager will WhatsApp you' pattern is exactly what legitimate local sellers do too, so buyers have little signal to tell them apart — which is worth knowing if your own checkout uses that flow.
Discussion angle
The scam's weak point is the handoff: contact-only capture then WhatsApp follow-up. Should Malaysian checkout flows stop using that pattern — or is it too ingrained in local commerce to abandon?
