What happened
OpenAI's help center says that starting in December, Plus, Pro, and Business plans will share a single usage allowance across ChatGPT and Codex, measured in tokens rather than message counts. Instant chat will not draw from the allowance, more advanced models and complex tasks consume more of it, and combined remaining usage plus reset times will appear under Settings → Usage. At the limit, users can wait for a reset, upgrade, or buy credits for eligible features.
Why it matters
If you run long Codex agent sessions on a Plus/Pro/Business plan, those tokens now compete with the ChatGPT usage you rely on for daily work — a heavy Codex day can eat the same budget. Before December, check Settings → Usage to see how fast your actual Codex tasks burn tokens, then decide per workflow whether to wait for resets, buy credits, upgrade, or move batch agent runs onto API billing where cost is metered separately.
Discussion angle
Has anyone measured how many tokens a typical Codex agent run costs versus a day of ChatGPT use — and does that make the shared allowance a de facto price rise for agent-heavy workflows?
