What happened
Sony is bringing the MDR-3R to Malaysia — a wired, USB-C-terminated revival of the 1979 MDR-3 that shipped with the original TPS-L2 Walkman. It's priced at RM259 for the standard model and RM299 for a Stranger Things Edition, both up for pre-order on Sony Malaysia's online store, with standard units delivering mid-November 2026 and the tie-in variant shipping toward year-end. The hardware is open-ear with 23mm dynamic drivers, an ultra-slim metal headband, swappable foam pads in orange/blue, and an in-line mic/remote — no battery, no pairing, no dongle.
Why it matters
There is no decision here for AI, agent, SaaS, or database builders — this is a consumer audio accessory launch, and the only mildly relevant detail is that Sony chose a native USB-C plug over 3.5mm, which matters only if you ship or test mobile/hardware products and need to confirm USB-C audio works across your device matrix. At RM259 vs RM299 for a Stranger Things-branded variant, it's a merch/pricing story, not a tooling one; don't spend meeting time on it beyond a one-liner.
Discussion angle
Worth 30 seconds max: is USB-C-only wired audio now a safe default to assume when testing device compatibility, or do you still keep a 3.5mm/dongle fallback in your test kit?
