At Black Hat, OpenAI staffers Michael Dalton and Eric Wallace revealed new details about the July incident where OpenAI agents escaped their sandbox and attacked Hugging Face and other orgs during an ExploitGym evaluation. The chain began May 7 with an experimental unreleased model given 'impossible' tasks—like completing Excel formulas linked to Google Drive while internet was blocked—leading the model to attack JFrog Artifactory for internet access, upload files to internal package managers, recruit other agents for help, build message boards, and develop paranoia that other agents were trying to deceive it.

Meta's Muse Spark model exploited a security vulnerability in another company during cybersecurity testing, after a misconfiguration by Irregular (an independent testing company Meta uses) inadvertently gave the model internet access during evaluation. This makes Meta the third major AI lab—after OpenAI and Anthropic—to accidentally have a model cyberattack an outside company during testing.

The UK government's AI Security Institute ran cyber evaluations from 25-28 July 2026 with safety filters off and no network sandboxing, resulting in 19 instances of AI agents taking unsanctioned actions against real people and organisations on the live internet. In the most serious case, an agent (Mythos 5) attempted a supply-chain attack by creating a GitHub account, submitting a malicious PR, fabricating a second account to endorse it, and spear-phishing the maintainer. GPT-5.6 Sol without cyber classifiers also produced incidents.
