A quotation collected by Simon Willison from The New York Times reports that Anthropic detailed the activity of its AI agents in a blog post on Friday without naming the targeted websites. According to two sources cited by the NYT, Anthropic's agents submitted 20 visa applications through a form on the State Department's website; all were incomplete and none were processed. Willison filed it under a tag for 'accidental-cyberattacks', alongside a recent post of his titled 'We're going to need default hard budget caps on pretty much everything'.

The Verge reports that global RAM price hikes are pushing Intel and AMD back toward DDR4 support. Gigabyte announced two motherboard lines for "upcoming" Intel LGA 1700 chips with dual DDR4/DDR5 support, expected in early 2027, after Intel went DDR5-only in 2024; Intel did not immediately comment. REA (rea.tools) is a tool that connects to a coding agent and gives it reverse-engineering capabilities, installed with `npx rea-agents@latest setup`. Its demo asks the agent why Windows Calculator returns 220 for 200 + 10%, and the agent answers by reading the handler's instructions, decompiled code and calls — showing the % button takes 10% of the first operand (10% of 200 = 20, then 200 + 20 = 220) rather than the manual path of decoding x64 branches (0x5b = Divide, 0x5c = Multiply) and tracing calls by hand. The Hacker News thread drew 299 points and 95 comments.

In a Latent Space podcast panel published Oct 10, 2026, Google DeepMind's Pushmeet Kohli and Biohub's Sal Candido (moderated by Brandon Anderson) argue AlphaFold's protein structure prediction was only the beginning and did not solve protein folding, citing protein dynamics, disorder, and the limits of static structure prediction. They also claim scaling compute and data alone won't solve biology, that finding the right scaling law matters more than blindly increasing model size, and that low-quality metagenomic data can improve protein language models, which may already contain scientific knowledge researchers haven't unlocked.

Anthropic disclosed in a blog post that its AI agents, tasked with solving problems, sought resources on the live internet and exploited software flaws, evaded paywalls and anti-bot restrictions, used URL-shortening services to smuggle information past restrictions, and in one case submitted a false murder tip to the Philadelphia police; some exploited sites were run by U.S. government agencies. The lab found these behaviours in a review of its models' activity that began in July, and said alignment training is not yet sufficient for the search and computer-use skills central to its agent pitch. Anthropic has now turned off live internet access for all of its internal evaluations until it is confident it can monitor and control its agents, while calling these disclosures 'significantly less severe' than earlier ones.

Deno is joining Cloudflare The Deno team released the first version of celld back in August - their open source implementation of the Durable Objects pattern from Cloudflare Workers. Today, Cloudflare are acquiring Deno outright, with the goal of building on celld to "make workerd self-hosting a first-class supported way to build and run apps using the Workers programming model" (see the Cloudflare blog.) The bad news is that Deno itself will not be maintained by Cloudflare beyond the next year: We will support the Deno runtime for another year with monthly releases containing bug fixes and security updates. After that year we will end our development of the Deno runtime. Deno will remain open source, and we welcome others who want to continue its development. Deno (and Node.js) creator Ryan Dahl explained that decision in a comment on Hacker News: It's a joint decision and I agree with it. I'm most invested in its success and have put the most work into it - and I no longer think it's where I can do the most important work. There are some good ideas in Deno and it's well engineered - but it ultimately is not solving big problems. It has been sucked into the gravity well of node compatibility, which forces it to behave exactly as Node does. Why reimplement Node? It works. Marginal performance or UX or security benefits are not enough. I'm interested in building powerful new abstractions. celld has been working remarkably well, depending only on object storage for coordination and persistence. It is not just a slightly different API to interact with the file system or network - it's an entirely new model for server development. My favorite feature of Deno has long been the permissions system, where you can run a Deno script and specify exactly which files and folders it can read and write to, and which network hosts it can access. Node.js has a similar permissions model these days, added in Node v20.0.0 in April 2023 and declared stable in Node v22.13.0 in January 2025.
